Program Description

Wheat is used for food, fiber, and sometimes as a cover crop in a garden or farm. Fabric of Life and Build Repair Grow are joining forces to explore how wheat can be ground using a bicycle powered grain mill, and cooked into bread, pizza dough, and other treats using different outdoor cooking methods. We’ll also explore how wheat can be used for fiber and woven into cloth.

Bicycles and people have a lot in common — both are filled with potential energy to accomplish great things! In this immersive one-day summer workshop, Fabric of Life and Build Repair Grow will collaborate to provide a hands-on program for students in upper elementary through high school and we’ll explore:

  • alternative methods to grinding grain – youth will get to put together a bicycle powered grain mill that we’ll use to grind wheat
  • different outdoor cooking methods for making food from wheat – pizza oven, hibachi, wood stove and
  • weaving with fibers from wheat plants

The day will start out in the garden and end around the table sharing food that we made together. Topics taught include growing and cooking food, bicycle parts/theory, bicycle-driven alternative power, and fiber arts.

About Build Repair Grow

Build Repair Grow is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization based in Western Massachusetts that began in February 2020. The core mission of Build Repair Grow is to provide young people with training in practical skills critical for developing individual resiliency, problem-solving, and self-sufficiency while promoting community health. We do this through teaching skills in growing and cooking food, sewing, basic carpentry, and bike repair.
