SUMMARY:March 8\, 2025: Pruning for Resilience with Walker Korby
DESCRIPTION:Join local arborculturalist\, Walker Korby for a morning of hands-on instruction as we begin the process of reclaiming the Bassett Homestead apple orchard. \nThe fundamentals of any pruning regimen should always start with understanding how trees grow\, break\, heal\, and degrade over time. Once you have internalized some of this knowledge\, and have understood  the effects our actions can have\, we are well on our way to a successful pruning journey. In this class we will enter this journey through the process of reclaiming some older fruit trees that have been left untended. The concepts and guidelines that we will focus on will cover what and where to remove in order to encourage a structure that will withstand wind\, ice\, heavy fruits\, and last for generations. This class is designed to enhance your understanding and create a framework of the why and how we make pruning cuts. It will be appropriate for beginners as well as those who are already comfortable on a pruning ladder with a pair of Felcos. Bring along any pruning tools you have\, a pair of safety glasses and a willingness to learn! \nRegister

SUMMARY:February 22\, 2025: Biodynamic Land Healing with Elisha Poulin
DESCRIPTION:Help Heal our Earth Through Biodynamics \nJoin Elisha Poulin for a one hour review of the theory and practice of biodynamics. Biodynamics is based off of Rudolph Steiner’s 1924 agricultural lectures and the work of Maria Thun and stimulates soil health and brings harmony to the land\, enlivening the area and providing healing forces from the cosmos. The principles of biodynamics can be applied quickly and easily\, or through deep and methodical practices. During this workshop\, Elisha will share her approach to biodynamics\, highlighting valuable ways we can contribute to the health of our Earth\, ourselves\, and the animals around us. Elisha’s hope is that attendees will come away with enough to be comfortable starting this practice. This program will focus on biodynamic preparations and the cosmic calendar. This workshop is intended for farmers\, gardeners\, and anyone who wishes to share in the beautiful practice of healing any piece of the earth\, small or large\, using biodynamics. \nElisha’s passions are all centered around anything to do with the health of the Earth\, ourselves\, animals and staying centered in love. She has been studying plant medicine and nutrition for the past 20 years. She is currently a studying/practicing homeopath\, biodynamic land healing consultant\, and a wellness coach. Elisha has been farming for the entirety of her life\, and practicing aspects of biodynamic farming for the past 5 years on her own as well as many others’ farms and properties. \nREGISTER

SUMMARY:Singing Ukulele Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Singing Ukulele Retreat\nfeaturing Jim Beloff and Kate O’Connor \nLast year Fabric of Life offered a new musical program as part of its ongoing efforts to preserve and promote traditional skills which enrich our daily lives: the Singing Ukulele Retreat. Its success has inspired us to bring the program back this summer with two superb musicians. \n\nThe workshop will feature two great musicians: \nJim Beloff has been a tireless evangelist for the ukulele for over 20 years. He has written many instruction books as part of his “Jumpin Jim’s” series as well as compiling the beloved “Daily Ukulele” songbooks. Over the years he had done hundreds of workshops\, introducing beginners to the ukulele and helping thousands to improve their playing. He has also written a concerto for solo ukulele and symphony orchestra—“Uke Can’t Be Serious”—and over 30 songs performed on his CDs. Jim’s 2010 workshop in Northampton sponsored by Downtown Sounds and the Northampton Community Music Center led to the creation of AEIOUkes\, Northampton’s ukulele club\, which still meets weekly at Forbes Library. He and his wife Liz were also featured performers in the Northampton Arts Council’s Four Sundays in February show “Ukes and Yo-yos”. \nKate O’Connor is a longtime career musician and band leader who has entertained audiences throughout New England\, Bermuda and Florida with her stellar vocals\, keyboards\, steel drum\, and guitar playing\, and her original R & B\, Jazz\, Pop\, and World Beat compositions. Kate is a best vocalist award winner from newspaper polls in the Western Massachusetts region\, and was a longtime studio session vocalist for #1 hit songwriter Tony Romeo (I Think I love You). She performs with A Beautiful Future Band\, (Caribbean\, Irish\, and multicultural original music)\, Blue Rendezvous\, (Retro Soul and Swing)\, and Catalytics Swing Band\, and teaches music lessons at the Northampton Community Music Center\, Smith College\, and Downtown Sounds. \n\nThe retreat will feature three sessions: there will be an introductory session for everyone led by Jim that will combine some warm-up playing and singing to get us all in the mood. At this session Jim will also talk about how he approaches arranging and performing a new song\, which is often a challenge for beginning and intermediate players who want to learn new material. \nThen half of the group will have a 90 minute session with Jim and the other half with Kate.; these sessions will focus on improving technique in playing and singing respectively. After that the groups will switch teachers for another 90 minute session. Following this there will be a community supper where we’ll have a chance to relax and socialize. The retreat will end with a short concert where our teachers will get a chance to perform for participants\, and then the group will get together and show off what they have learned during the day. \n  \nREGISTER

SUMMARY:Book Reading with Peggy Hart
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\nLocal artisan and author\, Peggy Hart joins us on March 14th at 7:30PM to celebrate her book\, Wool: Unraveling an American Story of Artisans and Innovation. \n\nWool: Unraveling an American Story of Artisans and Innovation\n\nIn this beautiful book\, our dear friend and neighbor Peggy Hart tells wool’s colorful and surprisingly epic tale. She shows how it has impacted millions of lives–from immigrants\, slaves\, and Native Americans to farmers and advertisers. Learn little-known but fascinating facts about US society’s changing relationship to wool–for example\, how huge flocks of sheep were driven to the California gold fields to feed hungry miners\, and why sheep grazed on the White House lawn during World War I. This is a story of technological and social change\, marketing forces\, and our choices as consumers. Wool is a must-read for anyone who has knitted (or worn!) socks\, woven a piece of cloth\, or curled up with a warm wool blanket. \n\n\n\n\nFrom the cover\n“Wool’s colorful and epic tale has impacted millions of lives\, including artisans\, inventors\, immigrants\, merchants\, mill owners\, millworkers\, slaves\, and Native Americans\, to farmers and advertisers. A story of technological and social change\, marketing forces\, and our choices as consumers\, Wool is a must-read for anyone who has knitted (or worn!) socks\, woven a piece of cloth\, or curled up with a warm wool blanket.” \n\n\nNetGalley review\n“Wool by Peggy Hart draws on the author’s deep professional experience in the wool industry to explore its rise\, fall\, and resurgence in America. From the birth of this nation to present day\, Hart traces the sheep\, fabrics\, and trends \n\n\n“This is an approachable general history–you can learn about agriculture\, social issues\, economics\, industry\, and fashion. It explores the impact mechanization (and convenience) had on America’s Wool industry. While this is an introductory volume\, an extensive reference and bibliography directs you to more information \n“This is an enjoyable read and the archival photographs provide additional delight.” \n\n\n \nAbout the Author\nPeggy Hart is a textile designer\, production weaver\, and teacher with experience in designing\, producing\, and marketing hundreds of blankets annually including custom blankets for sheep and alpaca farmers using their own yarn. The woolen mills of New England are gone\, but inside her barn in rural Massachusetts there lurks a complete 1940’s weave shop. Old industrial looms live their second life weaving cotton and wool blankets. Each loom is a ton and a half of greasy gears\, wheels\, and pulleys; mechanical innovation that made complex patterns possible. Hart has a deep interest in the history of weaving and wool in America. \nVisit Peggy’s Website \nFollow Peggy on Instagram \n\n\nRegister below

SUMMARY:Singing Ukulele Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Singing Ukulele Retreat\nfeaturing Stu Fuchs and Justina Golden \nFabric of Life is excited to offer a new musical program as part of its ongoing efforts to preserve and promote traditional skills which enrich our daily lives.  People have always made music\, but in our modern world most people are passive listeners rather than active music makers.  Both singing and playing ukulele are easy and accessible to anyone who wishes to discover how enjoyable and rewarding it is to be a musician. \nParticipants should have some experience in playing ukulele\, knowing basic chords and being able to easily switch between them.  Most ukulele workshops offer the chance to learn new songs and new techniques to improve your playing\, and this will be no exception.  But even though the ukulele is most often used to accompany singing\, attention to vocal technique is rarely offered in group settings to ukulele players.  So this retreat will also teach basic vocal technique\, how to use your breath to improve your singing. \nThe workshop will feature two great musicians: \nStu Fuchs is a lifelong musician\, award-winning teaching artist blending mindfulness practice and creative play.  He has presented his ukulele workshops and concerts at ukulele festivals around the world and has performed classical and gypsy jazz guitar with symphony orchestras.  Stu blends accessible mindfulness practices with playful holistic music instruction at his “ukulele zen” workshops and retreats.  He was awarded a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts for his work bringing healing music to cancer patients.  Stu recorded and toured with renowned sacred chant artist Snatam Kaur\, playing on her  “Best New Age” Grammy award nominated album “Beloved”.  Stu continues to offer weekly lessons and music inspiration at his YouTube channel “Ukulele Zen”. \nJustina Golden is a singer and vocal teacher since 1986.  She fell madly in love with teaching\, trying to explain how to wield something invisible that has the power to transform lives.  She has taught individuals\, small groups\, and choirs\, turning good singers into professional singers.  Justina also toured for 12 years in a singer/songwriter duo\, taught voice at the Dar Williams “Writing a Song That Matters” workshop\, and has taught at the Northampton Community Music Center and Smith College.  She now teaches in Florence\, MA at her Profound Sound Voice Studio. \nLearn More
